The sketchbook is dead! Long live Vermeer!

Vermeer study to celebrate reaching the last page and ending with a splash. The sketchbook is dead! Long live the sketchbook!

I filled my medium-sized carry-around sketchbook! Hooray! Because I’m usually working through several different sizes of sketchbooks and pads and blocks of different kinds of “good paper”, this usually takes me a bit over a year.

I celebrated by taking the time to do a study of Vermeer’s The Milkmaid on the last page. I’ve been working on gesture figures and faces while watching TV, and I wanted to see what I could do with those skills on a non-moving target. Turns out, they’re a lot easier to draw.

Time to start the next medium-sized sketchbook! Especially for outings, I keep thinking I should carry a mixed media sketchbook of heavier paper instead of basic sketch. I think I’d like the results better, provided I stopped the “Oh, that’s just going to be a doodly waste of a page” hesitation nonsense going on in my head.  Quick, somebody who draws in that style make a personal-growth-analogy drawing-battle manga series about that struggle so I can get over it!! 😉
